CHANN BANGKOK-NOI

Boutique Hotel

The project, Chann Bangkok Noi aims to encourage and inspire the members of the local communities to take ownership of the space and economy, while reenacting the traditional ways of living through activating their sense of citizenship and traditional values.

Taking into consideration its historical surrounding and its function as a hotel, the project has been inspired by the traditional Thai homes and canal-side cultures, bringing forward the idea that architecture should strive to evoke the feeling of being “simply at ease” with its context and pace of life. The different elements that embody the core values of the project suggest a thorough translation of architectural syntax, bringing to life the intention of reactivating the local communal spirit

Keeping in mind the ambitions towards a sustainable design, the materials and construction methods implemented throughout the project were applied to minimise the disruption caused towards its surrounding context. Easily transported and maintained, the modular steel structure and prefabricated wooden panels were assembled on site in order to leave as little construction waste as possible, thus, maintaining harmony with its community. The wooden panels can also be easily removed and replaced. Most notably, the veranda along the dam on the lower level was designed to be easily disassembled for the annual maintenance by the municipality, to ensure that the dam will fully serve the community in the years to come.
